Special Guidelines for the Disabled Elderly

There is a special rule intended to help families that take in an elderly person who is unable to live alone. Under this rule, a person who is both 60 or over and medically disabled (along with their spouse) can get food stamps as a separate household from the other people they are living with – but only if they can not purchase and prepare meals separately from those they live with because of their medical problems. In this situation, the income of the "house-mates" (who have agreed to purchase and prepare the food) cannot exceed 165% of the Federal Poverty Level.
